Garmin Fenix 9 FCC Filing Confirms LTE and Satellite on Wrist

What the FCC filing actually shows

A Garmin smartwatch carrying both LTE-M cellular and satellite messaging hardware has cleared certification at the US Federal Communications Commission. The filing — FCC ID IPH-05170, model number A05170 — received its final action date on 5 August 2026, and the technical details inside it are significant enough to rewrite the spec sheet for Garmin's flagship outdoor line.

The approved device covers LTE-M bands 2, 4 and 12 with voice capability, alongside NB-NTN satellite bands 23 and 255 for data. On top of that, the filing lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ANT+ and NFC. The FCC documentation classifies the device explicitly as a smartwatch — not a handheld inReach unit — and an electronic label drawing in the filing clearly shows a classic round watch case. The SAR report, which tests radiation absorption, treats it as a wrist-worn device and references both nylon and vented titanium strap configurations during testing.

Critically, the filing notes the device is intended for use "in front of the mouth or head" — regulatory language that typically corresponds to a product capable of handling voice calls directly from the wrist. That would be a first for the Fenix line.

Global regulatory sweep points to imminent launch

The FCC was not the only regulator busy that day. South Korea's Radio Research Agency certified five Garmin model numbers — AA5168 through AA5172 — on 5 August 2026, the same date as the FCC's action on A05170. All five filings then appeared in Indonesia's database on 11 August 2026, registered under PT Garmin Indonesia Distribution, with every model listed as manufactured in Taiwan and categorised as "Outdoor Product."

Analysts tracking Garmin's filing patterns read simultaneous multi-country regulatory approvals as a clear signal that global mass production is complete and regional sales offices are preparing their paperwork. Two further model numbers — A05419 and A05420 — were separately certified on 14 July 2026, adding to the picture of a substantial product family moving through the system.

Photos and the full user's manual remain under short-term confidentiality. That window expires on 1 February 2027, meaning Garmin retains legal cover to keep the product's commercial name and appearance secret until then — though a launch well before that date is widely anticipated.

Three models expected — but only one with satellite and LTE

Based on analysis of the regulatory filings, the current expectation among industry observers is that Garmin is preparing three members of the Fenix 9 family: a Fenix 9, a Fenix 9 Pro, and a Fenix 9 Pro inReach. Crucially, satellite connectivity is not expected to be standard on the Pro this time — it would be exclusive to the Pro inReach tier. The filing A05170, which carries all the cellular and satellite hardware, is the only one of the five known filings to include that capability.

The five filings also confirm a MIP-Solar display option alongside an AMOLED version. However, it is worth being clear about what remains unconfirmed: display specifications, sensor upgrades, battery life figures, and case dimensions are all still in the rumour category and do not appear in the verified regulatory documents.

Separately, the Enduro 4 has its own confirmed FCC filing: model A05216 cleared the commission on 18 June 2026 under FCC ID IPH-05216, classified as a mobile GNSS navigator. The Enduro 4 filing shows no satellite or LTE hardware, and it is expected to remain a MIP-display, solar-charged ultra and trail watch.

Timing: what history suggests

Garmin's own release cadence is instructive. The Fenix 8 appeared at the FCC on 14 August 2024, just ahead of its official unveil on 27 August 2024. With the Fenix 9 filing dated 5 August 2026, the parallel is difficult to ignore. Industry observers point to a possible announcement as early as 25 August 2026, though mid-to-late September has also been suggested. The leading expectation is that the Enduro 4, Fenix 9 AMOLED, and Fenix 9 MIP Solar models arrive in September, with the satellite-equipped Pro inReach following later — January 2027 has been floated as a rough window for that model.

What Garmin has said publicly

Garmin has not officially confirmed any Fenix 9 product. In February 2026 the company stated it had "a significant number of new product introductions" planned for the year. On an investor call, CEO Cliff Pemble told analysts to expect "stronger performance in the second half of the year because of product launch timing," and described 2026 as "a very active year for outdoor."

UK retail pricing for any Fenix 9 model has not been confirmed. For context, the Fenix 8 launched in the US from $999.99, while the subsequent Fenix 8 Pro — the first Garmin watch with built-in inReach satellite messaging, announced in September 2025 — started at $1,200 for the 47mm AMOLED version. A dedicated Pro inReach model with LTE would sit above base pricing, and both LTE and satellite capabilities are expected to carry ongoing subscription costs. Specific UK subscription figures have not been announced.

What this means for UK buyers right now

• Off-grid safety: Satellite messaging on a Fenix-tier watch would, for the first time, allow serious hill walkers and mountain runners to send SOS messages and two-way texts via satellite without carrying a separate device.
• Wrist calls: LTE-M voice support is new to the Fenix line — the filing's language around mouth-and-head use suggests genuine hands-free call capability from the wrist.
• Fenix 8 deals incoming: A new generation almost always pushes down prices on the outgoing model. Anyone considering a Fenix 8 may find better value waiting until Black Friday 2026 or beyond.
• Budget for subscriptions: LTE and satellite features are unlikely to be free to use — though confirmed UK pricing for those services does not yet exist.
